Week 2 Term 4

Our week began with a new addition to our little garden .... a swan plant..I wonder if we will have any Monarch butterflies on it later in the year?

In No Child Left Inside we continued our preparation for the Kowhai Athletics Day, this time concentrating on long jump skills.

In maths this week we have been thinking about numbers that go together to make 10. Some great extension thinking going on..well done Room 10!

In Week 1 we started to think about writing stories and proudly shared our stories with our buddy class.
This week we looked at describing characters in our stories by writing a description of the troll from the Three Billy Goats Gruff story. We then used Tux Paint to bring our ideas alive.

My troll is scary. It’s spikey. If you touch him he would be so spikey it’s like a needle.

See more descriptions and pictures on our Kidzstuff blog linked to this blog.
In Art we continued to think about weaving by making some paper suns by weaving warm colours together. As part of our Sun Safety topic we are checking the UV ratings daily. Now you can do this at home using the link on the right hand side of this blog.

We continued to learn about magic 'e' and this week looked at how it joins hands with its vowel friend 'i' making it say its name.

Week 1 Term 4

Welcome to our first Blog Post of Term 4. Our week began with a mini Powhiri for children who had joined us at Nelson Central since the beginning of Term 3. This included many of our new Kowhai friends who have turned 5 and started big school.

As you can see in our inquiry work we have been thinking hard about what we already know about the Sun and Sun Safety and what we would like to find out more about.

We recorded this week's poem and photos of us being sun safe as a reminder to others to do the same!

As part of this terms Art focus on Fabric and Fibre we looked at the warp and weft in pieces and hessian and pulled out threads to make some interesting patterns.

When Barbara came in to work with us we planted sunflower seeds and weeded our class flower bed ready for when they grow tall enough to plant out...mmmmm...how long will that  take????
In our phonics lessons we are learning about magic 'e' and how it makes its vowel friends say their name rather than their sound in a word. Just ask a Room 10 friend to explain it to you.

In No Child Left Inside we have started preparing for our Athletics Day later this term. This week we practiced sprinting and how to hand over the baton in a relay.

In maths we have been revisiting doubles and were able to use this knowledge to double some really big numbers.
We also looked at a rather tricky problem about how much a sunflower would grow each day to reach 13cm by the end of the week. A great I can attitude and collaboration was used in order to work this one out......

...well done Room 10!

Week 9 Term 3

Welcome to our final blog for Term 3. Once again we enjoyed celebrating the 6th birthday for another Room 10 friend. I am not sure if all these birthdays are doing much for my waistline.....
...but I am sure these rather tricky sporting activities this week have helped us all keep fit and healthy in body and in mind!

We have enjoyed working together to solve problems, like the one below which helped us think about compound words....
..and working out together what had made these flowers from last week's Discovery Time change colour!
We were all very proud of our team effort at a fabric collage showing the four changing seasons of nature. Please stop in the entrance area of Room 10 to have a look at the finished piece..well done Room 10 Together Everyone Achieved More
