week 4 Term 1

Kia ora and welcome to our Week 4 Blog.

This week we had our first Mandarin lesson with Hayley. She will be working with us for 20-30 minutes every Tuesday afternoon.

We learnt lots of facts about China and also how to say Hello and Goodbye. The video below reminds us how to say these two phrases and also introduces some new phrases which I am sure we will be covering in the next few weeks.

As part of the Key Competencies of Managing Self and Relating to Others we have been thinking about bullying and respect this week. We used this Youtube video to help us.

We looked at the word 'a' this week and how to form it correctly in our handwriting using the Casey The Caterpillar words 'Open mouth, close, short stick"

We also worked on holding our pencils correctly, ask your child to show you what we learnt and then check with this video that they have remembered the correct grip.

News Groups have got off to an exciting start this week, we even had some 'living' news when Stream the guinea pig came in to see us plus an amazing magic fish trick.

In Discovery time we continued to think about butterflies, caterpillars and insects.

We used are great skills of planning and cooperation to make our own play about the Very Hungry Caterpillar.

Week 3 Term 1

Welcome to our Week 3 blog where we share some highlights of what we have been learning over the last 5 days. We have started our Jolly Phonics programme looking at the first two sounds 's' and 'a'.

We have also been practicing our handwriting and building fine motor skills through various writing activities including the 'Make A List" activity and making our names out of play dough.

On Tuesday we had our first sports lesson run by the No Child Left Inside programme. As you can see we were practicing our throwing skills.
When Sam was teaching us we started work on our self portraits. We practiced on whiteboards to begin with before drawing outlines on paper ready for painting next week.
We were all very proud of our team effort at completing both parts pf the giant 123, ABC puzzle during reading rotation time.
After the vast amount of rain we had earlier in the week we decided to go and take a look at the river next to school. It was very muddy, very full and very loud. We were amazed to see that the ford was completely under water.
On the way back to class we practiced our puddle jumping skills!
This week we have started having milk. Some friends from our buddy class came along to show us how to fold our milk cartons so they can be recycled into roof tiles to be used in Asia.
An impromptu fashion show during discovery showcased our creativity......
........and we also thought about what we are good at by linking this to our Dr Seuss theme.

Week 2 Term 1

Kia Ora and welcome to our Room 10 Week 2 blog.

Last week we went to visit Judy in the office and she asked us to help her work out which school hat colour was most popular so she could order more of that colour. Back in class we set about the challenge of finding how many hats of each colour we had in Room 10.
First we made a pile of each colour of hat…… but it was a bit tricky to count how many hats were in the bigger piles.

Next we decided to use one square on our carpet for each hat …but then the colours were all mixed up again.
Finally we thought about using the carpet squares again….but this time putting each colour in the same line of squares.
We found out that red was the most popular…. but how could we show Judy what we found. We thought of many ingenious ways to carry our class mat down to the office without the hats tipping off but in the end Tracy helped us to make a pictogram to show Judy what we discovered.

This week we have been working in our reading rotation groups and exploring the range of activities to help us develop our motor
skills and literacy skills as well as the key Competency of Relating to Others

We have continued to enjoy reading with a buddy out in the sunshine.

We finger painted our names and then worked out how many letters were in our name. Check out the graph in class that shows our results. You can see each of our names by clicking on our names on the Kidzstuff blog. You will find a link to this at the top right of this blog.

We shared our ideas about who helps us to learn by drawing a learning map.
In Discovery Time on Friday we thought about how to manage ourselves when things don't always go our own way and then put these skills into action whilst having heaps of creative and imaginative fun learning including.....
 ...dressing up
 ......creations from recycled boxes
...art projects with our trainee Teacher Aide
 ..imaginative journeys
 ......tall, tall towers

Week 1 Term 1

A big welcome to all our families and whanau who are looking at this blog. We hope that you enjoy the pictures that we put up over the following weeks allowing you all, near or far, to be part of our learning in Room 10

The year has got off to a great start with class routines getting established, friendships being made and the children talking about what their learning would look like for them over the next term. Our school theme for this year is from the Dr Seuss book Oh, The Places You'll Go!

On Tuesday the whole school took part in a Mihi Whakatkau to welcome new children and teachers to our school. Can you spot some of  our Room 10 friends being welcomed by Matua Tom?

We have been on lots of walks around school to discover who is inside all the different buildings and also to take photos for our shared STOP! book to remind us of where the school boundaries are. Knowing where to stop will help to keep us safe at school.
We have learnt lots of class routines, including eating our morning tea together on our Room 10 deck, and how to be sun safe by wearing our hats outside.

We have been reading our books altogether so that we can help each other inside.....
 ...and outside the classroom.

We had a lovely surprise on Thursday when a very young visitor  came to join in at mat time!!!!

Don't forget to share this blog with friends and family around the world and leave us a comment.
Wishing you all a safe and happy week.
